JioPhone to Be Powered by Qualcomm 205 SoC: All You Need to Know

Qualcomm had recently announced its 205 Mobile Platform, in March this year, to bring 4G LTE connectivity (including 4G VoLTE) to entry-level feature phones.


The new JioPhone, or "India ka smartphone" as dubbed by RIL Chairman Mukesh Ambani, will be powered by Qualcomm 205 SoC. The chipmaker has confirmed the partnership through its official Twitter handle. Qualcomm had recently announced its 205 Mobile Platform, in March this year, to bring 4G LTE connectivity (including 4G VoLTE) to entry-level feature phones.

The Qualcomm 205 Mobile Platform is specially designed for OEMs and ODM. The company's main aim is the sub-$50 markets in emerging countries such as India, Latin America, and Southeast Asia.

"Devices with the Qualcomm 205 Mobile Platform are designed to support consumers, micro-enterprises, and others, to economically communicate using advanced LTE data services such as Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWi-Fi) as well," according to the company.

Apart from 4G VoLTE support, Qualcomm 205 SoC connectivity options also include 3G and 2G networks, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1, FM radio, dual-SIM, and ANT+. The Qualcomm 205 SoC sports a dual-core CPU clocked at 1.1GHz and can support up to 3-megapixel rear and selfie camera, and can boast of a VGA display at 480p. It also brings support for HD video streaming and Linux-based OS.
